Some gems from the archive
Offering some older stuff from the archive with some random thoughts mixed in
Just a little preamble: I considered starting a weekly video blog here, where I check in and talk to all of you via the camera about what’s up in my life, the progress (or lack thereof) of projects, and similar things. Then I had a temporary moment of sanity and nixed the whole idea. Lucky you, you dodged that bullet. I’m sorry I ever considered it, and I promise not to put you in that kind of danger again. I honestly don’t know what came over me.
I noticed that Martin Olson showed up in the comments of the videos I ran in this Substack in the last two dispatches. I am flattered by his comments, and I’d like to point out that if you’re not familiar with his work in TV, Movies, and Books, you should be. Besides being an amazing creative mind, Martin is a decent human being with whom I have enjoyed a beer and a stimulating conversation, and his company is a genuine pleasure. That’s not something I can say about many people I met in Hollywood when I lived and worked there.
Anyway, here’s a little stroll through some memories.
This showed up in my feed, and I was reminded of the early nineties in SF. It was recorded in 93 in the old Horsehoe Cafe on the lower Haight. I believe it aired in 94 in the UK. I think I show up about 10:25, but it’s worth a watch in its entirety. This was the early, heady days of the cyberpunk movement.

Next door to the Horseshoe cafe was the infamous Spaghetti Western, where I often ate breakfast. Around the same time as the above interview, Don Webb interviewed me there for Fringeware Review.
That interview is archived here. https://josephmatheny.com/2023/01/30/fringeware-review-interview-with-joseph-matheny/
My thinking has remained on a track that retains the original direction, although it has evolved since then.
Sequoyah Kennedy gives us his take on AI and Human Intelligence
AI is a Nothingburger. You're wrong.
I’m glad to see people starting to talk about the issues I’ve been repeating for a few years now. Instead of repeating myself, I will send people this video from now on.
"There's not a shred of evidence on the internet that this band has ever existed": This apparently AI-generated artist is racking up hundreds of thousands of Spotify streams
The Velvet Sundown has no online footprint, a suspiciously artificial artist image and a ChatGPT-generated biography - but somehow has almost 350,000 monthly listeners
Very cool interview in Fringeware!
